Short URLs and QR Codes

What is a QR code?

A QR (quick response) code is a barcode that contains data encoded in a specific format. The QR code usually represents a string of alphanumeric characters. Many scanners can recognize when the QR code contains a string of characters that is a URL and will automatically send the user to the site. Skycore will supply four different EC (Error Correction) options for the QR code.

What is Error Correction?

Error correction is detecting potential errors of the QR code and reconstructing it to the original to be decode-able. Skycore will display 3 different levels of EC:

  • Level L – 7% Error Correction
  • Level M – 15% Error Correction
  • Level H – 30% Error Correction

What is the difference between the percentages of error correction?

High EC allows print barcodes to work with glare or damage as part of the barcode. A high EC also allows for branded QR codes with logos inside. A low EC allows for simpler plain QR code or QRs displayed on a digital screen where there is no glare, damage or folding issues.

What is a short URL?

A short URL is a URL, normally hosted on a separate domain, that is assigned to redirect to the original (usually longer) URL. Many short URLs can be made to redirect to one ‘original’ URL.

How are QR codes and Short URLs used in asset tracking?

By placing different short URLs  (or their corresponding QR codes) in different ads and other placements, you can keep track which placement is performing best by seeing which short URL is getting the most traffic. If all traffic was sent to the original URL, without a short URL intermediary, there would be no way of determining the traffic’s source or determining successful sources. For example, tracking asset A can be a QR code on a magazine leading to URL A. Tracking asset B could be delivered via a MMS campaign and will lead to URL B.

How do I track traffic sources to a page? (i.e. How do I create a Tracking QR code and URL campaign?)
Under the “Mobile Web” tab go to the “Tracking QR/TinyURL” section and click the “Create QR & URL Campaign” button. Here you can name the campaign as it would appear in the “Tracking QR/TinyURL” section as well as assign a URL to track via short URL. Once you create the campaign it will appear in the list of campaigns in the “Tracking QR/TinyURL”.

What is the difference between a “Custom URL” and “Landing Page”?

Since a short URL and QR code are automatically assigned to each landing page you create, a tracking campaign is automatically created for each landing page you create. These are different from the campaigns you create in the “Tracking QR/TinyURL” section, as those campaigns are made to track short URLs directed to any page, not necessarily one hosted on our servers.

Another difference, you will note, is the page you are sent to when you click the “Edit” link next to the campaign’s name. For a custom URL you are directed to a page that allows you to change the name and destination of the campaign as well as shut it off. For a landing page campaign you are sent to the landing page’s profile where the page can be previewed, edited and so on.

How do I change the name of a tracking campaign?

For a custom URL tracking campaign: In the “Tracking QR/TinyURL” section, click the “Edit” link that appears next to the campaign name and the campaign settings dialogue box will open up. Here you can change the name and destination of the campaign as well as shut it off.

For a landing page tracking campaign: The name of the campaign is determined by the name you’ve given your landing page. In order to change the name of the tracking campaign you will have to edit the landing page name in the landing page builder.

WARNING: Moving the asset will permanently delete the stats you’ve collected with it so far, even if you move it back.

How do I change the destination URL of a custom URL tracking campaign?

The click and scan data from the previous URL is still retained. This can be helpful if the destination page’s contents are now on a different domain, as you can keep tracking the success of what is essentially the same page without having to create a new campaign for it.

In the “Tracking QR/TinyURL” section click the “Edit” link that appears next to the campaign name and the campaign settings dialogue box will open up. How do I deactivate a single tracking URL?

In the “Tracking QR/TinyURL” section click the “Tracking Assets” link. This will open up a list of all the QR codes and short URLs directing to a page. In the “Status” column select “Inactive” from the drop down menu of the corresponding tracking asset.

What happens when I make a campaign or individual tracking asset inactive? Will I lose my data?

Inactivating a campaign retains the data but it means that all QR codes and short URLs within it will redirect to a page that tells users that the link expired instead of redirecting to the usual page. When you inactivate a single tracking asset the same thing will happen as above, but only for the inactive tracking URL.
